CIO & Leader: Are You Leader Enough

01 February 2012 05:57 am

Have you ever wondered what kind of a leader you are?

In case you’re too firm, your employees fear you and want to run away. If you’re too lenient and focused on your employees’ problems, they slack off. Have you ever wondered what the perfect mix would be and where you stand?

Well, sometime in the early 60s, Robert Blake and Jane Mouton, formulated a test that fundamentally asks you questions based on your management style. Based on your answers, you are then required to plot the results into a 9X9 matrix.

This test, also commonly known as the Mouton and Blake Leadership Grid, is built to help you understand what category of leader you fall into. It also helps you understand the making of the perfect leadership style; which is as task oriented as it is people oriented.

Coincidentally, a lot of our audience and peers have inquired what 9.9 Media stands for; specifically with regards to our decision to use 9.9

Once you do take a look at this leadership test, you will soon understand that the perfect style of leadership is encapsulated in cell (9,9) from the leadership matrix. This indicates a balance between task orientation and people orientation. It indicates the need to build teams, and make these teams feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves. It gives them a sense of perspective and purpose. We at 9.9 Media live, breathe and eat the (9,9) Leadership style. This is the core philosophy behind the name of our company and how we work as an organisation.

The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say “I.” And that’s not because they have trained themselves not to say “I.” They don’t think “I.” They think “we”; they think “team.” They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don’t sidestep it, but “we” gets the credit…. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done - Peter Drucker

Given the fact that we are taking our brand The CTO Forum to the next level of evolution – CIO & Leader – we wanted you to understand that we are dedicated to helping make better leaders out of all of us.

As part of CIO & Leader, we are looking to bring you, high quality content on Leadership. We understand, that today as CIOs you are as much a part of top management as any other C-Level executive if not more. We also recognise your keenness to undertake what it takes to bring in unprecedented levels of leadership into your organization – and we want to walk that journey with you.

Think of us as curators almost, of anything that helps understand this role of the 'leader' better. Allow us to share our insights that can help you carve yourselves into the leaders of your organization.

We can begin, by sharing with you this test. Just to see where you stand.

We thank you for your support and hope you enjoy the content that we aim to bring you.
