Epic: The First Web Browser from India Launched

21 July 2010 11:47 am

Hidden Reflex, a Bangalore–based software startup has launched the first browser targeted at Indian audiences.  The browser called Epic has been created by a dedicated team of Indian engineers on the popular open–source Mozilla platform.  Any internet user can now download the browser for free by logging onto the website www.epicbrowser.com

Epic provides a uniquely Indian browsing experience.  Epic’s India sidebar supports Indian content by providing users access to the latest national and regional news from popular publications, live television channels, videos, stock quotes, live cricket scores, top music albums, and local events.  Users can choose from 1500+ customized Indian themes and wallpapers ranging from freedom fighters to famous Bollywood and regional film stars.  Writing in Indian languages is supported throughout Epic.  Users can instantly write in Indian languages on any webpage or in Write, Epic’s free built-in word processor.  Twelve Indian languages are currently supported.

Free antivirus scanning and healing is built into Epic, the world’s only browser to offer this service.  Users can save money by performing regular virus scans on Epic for free, and every file they download in Epic is automatically scanned.  Another unique security measure warns users when they’re about to visit potentially dangerous websites.

Inaugurating the launch of EPIC browser, Mr. B.V. Naidu, Former Director of Software Technology Parks of India, Bangalore said “Epic is an exciting product.  Product innovation will be the next phase for the Indian IT industry.  I hope to see more technologists catch the entrepreneurial spirit.”

According to Alok Bhardwaj, CEO and Founder of Hidden Reflex “We’re excited to introduce a uniquely Indian browsing experience that we hope will reach and resonate with every citizen in the country.  As an organisation, we foresee huge growth in internet usage in India considering the low current penetration.  Our focus with Epic is making it easy enough to use for first time web users and still powerful enough to be essential for advanced users.”

Epic is the first browser to have built a suite of sidebar applications to improve multi-tasking and productivity.  Pre-installed applications include communication apps for Facebook, Orkut, Gmail and more, entertainment apps such as a Picture-in-Picture Video Sidebar and Games, and utilities like File Backup, My Computer, a To-Do list, and Maps.  Over 1500 user-installable applications are also available to the end user for free.
